How to Manage Asthma Episodes

  1. Know your warning signs.
  2. Remove yourself or your child from the triggers.
  3. Follow your individual asthma plan.
  4. Keep calm and relaxed.
  5. Rest.

Seek Emergency Care or Call 911 If:

  • The symptoms (wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath) get worse even after using your plan with the medicines you are prescribed. Most medications give results in 15 minutes.
  • Your breathing becomes more difficult. You are struggling to get air in or out, you are hunched over to breathe better, or you are working so hard to breathe that your neck or chest are sucked in with each breath.
  • You have trouble walking or talking.
  • You cannot work or play.
  • Your fingernails or lips are gray or blue.
